Followers of the Holy Blue Light

A splinter sect from the main line church, the Followers believe in the divinity of an apparition appearing to its Pope after a lengthy period of self-deprivation, a Spirit composed of a shimmering indigo illumination. The fervor with which this holy man preached the new gospel quickly spread throughout this regional offshoot.

Everything That's Old...

Where the "magic" happens...

I have a new hobby to while away the time while I'm waiting to figure out what I'm going to do with the rest of my life. I'm painting miniature fantasy armies.

Back forty-odd years ago I used to paint 25mm scale figures, and was moderately successful with them. But as life and trauma got ahead of me, I fell away from the hobby, although I held on to my steamer trunk of painted and unpainted figures. I kept hoping that one of these days I'd be able to pick it up again, although the more time that passed, the less likely it seemed.

This time around I started painting them as a way to try to better control the tremors in my hands. The miniatures I'm painting his time are in 6mm scale, making the standard human sculpture about as tall as a dime stood on its edge. I chose that size because (a) they're much less expensive, (b) there is only so much detail I can expect to paint on them, and (c) when a tremor inevitably makes me screw up I can cut myself some slack because it's ridiculous for me to think my shaky hands could accurately paint something so small.

It's turning out to be more than just therapeutic, it's more fun than I expected, too. I don't have anyone local against whom I can weigh my tactical acumen, so I am satisfying myself with painting and organizing the figures. So far I have amassed ready armies of undead; goblins; demons; wood elves; dark elves; minotaurs, mythical beasts, and tree-people; and crusader-esque forces. Right now I'm working my way through painting orcs and their allies, with dwarves, bugbears, hobgoblins, ogres, pseudo-African were-creatures, and more waiting for their turns under the brush. This should be enough to keep me busy for another 3-4 months, anyway.

So this is what I've been up to lately, when I'm not fretting about the end of democracy and my lack of employment. I'm going to use this old domain to house photos and text about this enterprise, primarily for my own amusement. Still, it'd feel a lot more worthwhile if I could get some comments, praise or criticism. (That's a hint.)
